Two current projects are underway for UK Flag carrier British Airways at London Heathrow Airport.
Part of British Airways plans to update their aircraft fleet includes delivery of the Airbus A380 aircraft. To accommodate the largest passenger aircraft in the world requires alterations to the infrastructure of Heathrow as well as the aircraft maintenance facilities and apron hard standing used by BA.
NG Bailey has chosen to use the Award Winning Flori/67 plug in fluorescent lighting system for the temporary lighting installation, to provide access and egress lighting and Blakley 110V 400W metal halide discharge lighting for the flood lighting.
Although ideal to promote reduced electricity usage and to preserve emergency battery packs, Flori/67 is also perfect for enhancing health and safety on construction sites. Indeed it has been used by NG Bailey at Heathrow to enhance health and safety for both projects.
In the smaller of the two projects, known as Nose In First (NIF), due to the fact that aircraft are parked nose in first, an apron is being expanded and strengthened to support the weight of aircraft. Also an airbridge will be installed to allow all weather refurbishment and maintenance without taking up valuable hangar space. Flori/67 has been used inside a building ensuring the interior is lit adequately for works to be carried out. In addition to this the Flori/67 ensures in the event of a power failure that key locations, such as exits and incoming power supply point remain illuminated.
A Blakley B1 mains distribution assembly provides distribution to two Blakley 5kVA transformers, one dedicated to the temporary lighting circuits via hard wire facility and the other providing power tool 16A & 32A socket outlets.
The second project is again an apron expansion project but requires NG Bailey to relocate a substation. The works are outside within a secure area which is airside with designated access and walkways. Local facilities such as general offices, canteen and security are provided by Portacabins. All walkways are illuminated by Flori/67 with key areas such as emergency egress and doorways protected by fluorescents fittings complete with emergency battery backup in case of power failure.
Again Blakley Mains Distribution Assembly and site transformers provide the power distribution.
Outside areas for both projects are illuminated with Blakley 110V 400W metal halide flood lights. These units provide light output roughly equivalent to a 1500W halogen luminaire.
