Blakley Electrics are the UK market leader in the supply of power distribution equipment and lighting systems for use on construction and civil engineering projects. All of our Construction Products are designed to be robust, long lasting and easy to install.
Construction of Jubilee Market was funded by Network Rail, who are constructing a new viaduct in Borough to increase rail capacity through London. Construction of Jubilee Market, situated just to the West of the main Borough Market, was needed as part of the existing Borough Market is temporarily closed to facilitate the construction of the viaduct.
Skanska were the main contractor with the electrical design carried out by Atkins.
Jubilee Market’s clear plastic roof is made from the same durable material used for the Beijing Water Cube and Cornwall’s Eden Project. This covered area brings in lots of natural light and provides a large area for market traders to set up their stalls. For electrical supply 18 Blakley Electrics Ground Mounted Distribution Assemblies (GMDAs) were installed. The GMDAs incorporate RCDs which provide local earth leakage protection to each individual user. The overload and short circuit protection being contained in a purpose built brick feeder pillar.
All the equipment within the Blakley GMDA unit is suitably IP rated to suit the weather conditions. Drainage being allowed via an extended drainpipe specially added to the lower segment of the GMDA enclosure, which is sunk into the ground.
The lids of the GMDAs are constructed from 8.0mm thick chequer plate. The lid is hinged to allow easy access to the socket outlet. A real benefit of the GMDA design is that the lid can be closed whilst allowing the extension cable providing the electrical supply between the GMDA and market stall to be in use. The lid can be locked shut whether the GMDA is in use or not.
The Blakley Standard GMDA has been tested and certified to FACTA Class B allowing for vehicular passage in a normally pedestrian area. Heavy Duty GMDAs are available certified to FACTA Class F. In 2012 when the viaduct is complete Network Rail will hand the land back to the Market, complete with the original restored Victorian roof and additional trading space.
