New life has been breathed into the once thriving rail facilities at Eastleigh in Hampshire. Following the closure of the works at the end of 2005, with the last 500 staff being made redundant, it looked like the end had finally arrived for the famous yard.
Recently leased on a five year term by a specialist rail company, the yard once destined for demolition is now used by a variety of customers to service, overhaul and maintain rail vehicles of all types. The facility is perfectly situated next to the main line from Southampton to Waterloo and having had the third rail electrical supplies activated, can accept electric locomotives as well as diesel powered.
Southern Electric Contracting, Farnham, have recently completed installation of equipment for rolling stock cleaning at the Eastleigh site. The installation included lighting suspended on catenaries as well as a series of Blakley Electrics SELE assemblies.
The SELE product supplied for this installation, incorporates a core balanced earth leakage sensor working with an MCB fitted with a shunt trip (the ‘S’ prefix to ELE, denotes the ELE is non-standard, in this instance fitted with a socket). The sensor, manufactured by Blakley Electrics, makes the assembly suitable for installation in DC Electrified Lines Areas. It is immune from the effects of DC leakage. The Blakley ELE range incorporate the same type of sensor, and are widely installed where traction power is derived from the Third Rail (mainly the old Southern Region).
The SELE assemblies supplied were fitted with 16A switch interlocked Hypra sockets, to enable safe and easy use of portable cleaning equipment for locomotives and rolling stock. The SELE assemblies were fastened to angle iron stands using the bracketry incorporated in the SELE design and fixed to specially constructed concrete plinths at the trackside
